Strategic importance
Known as a camp city, Polonaruwa was a safe hideout for armies, thereby giving it the name ‘Kandavuru Nuvara’. The city stretched for several kilometers along the east of the majestic reservoir – Parakrama Samudra, and was protected by 6kms of durable encircling walls.

At the heart of Polonnaruwa lies the Quadrangle, also known as the Dalada Maluwa or Terrace of the Tooth Relic. This sacred precinct was the epicenter of ancient religious activities, renowned for its intricately carved outer walls and elaborate moonstones at each of the four entrances.
The Lankathilaka is an impressive image house with towering walls reaching 55 ft in height. It encloses a large, headless Buddha statue within its high, narrow space, showcasing the grandeur and architectural ingenuity of ancient Sri Lankan temple design.
